In August 2020, the Standard-Examiner reported that Ogden police had arrested 18-year-old Shai Bunpai in connection with a sexual-assault investigation involving an underage girl. According to that report, police said the alleged incident occurred on July 13 and was described in a probable cause statement.

Allegations described in the probable cause statement

According to the Standard-Examiner’s report, police said they interviewed the girl and her father about the alleged offense and about concerns for the girl’s safety. The report said the girl told police she had been spending time with Bunpai and that the two were kissing on July 13 before he allegedly insisted on sex.

The article reported that the girl told police she refused and said she was not ready for sex. The probable cause statement, as summarized by the Standard-Examiner, characterized the incident as rape.

Additional allegations described in the report

The Standard-Examiner reported that the probable cause statement included additional allegations from the girl, including prior biting and other alleged acts of violence. The article also stated that the girl expressed fear because Bunpai had allegedly spoken about a desire to kill someone.

The report further stated that the girl’s father told police that Bunpai had allegedly made statements about having fantasies involving killing someone, and that the family feared possible further violence.

Alleged threats after the reported incident

According to the article, the probable cause statement said the girl received text messages after the alleged incident that threatened kidnapping.

Bunpai’s account

The Standard-Examiner reported that police said Bunpai acknowledged having sex with the girl but claimed the encounter was consensual.
